Competitor FAQ

How do I become a competitor?

If you want to upload Mp3s, join teams and compete in wars, request a status change by emailing a tab and an mp3 file under 2.0 MB to soundcheck@musicianwar.com. Your request should include:

  1. Your login userID
  2. Confirmation that you have read the rules and legal notice
  3. An Mp3 file
  4. A text tab of the Mp3 file complying with the competitor rules for your instrument

All complete requests are granted. This is just a check to make sure you have the basics down. Once your status change has been approved, Your House will be upgraded to allow you to enter wars. Please allow 3 business days for your request to be processed.

How many wars can I be in at one time?

You can have one entry at a time in each championship and each melee. You can have as many concurrent challenges as you like.

What is the different between a challenge, skill match, and grudge match war?

All three types are challenges. We call them challenges because the first poster can set the rules. When you pick "same skill level", you are put in Skill Matched war. When you pick your opponent by name you are put in Grudge Match. We could have put them all in a longer list on the front page called "Challenges," but we think it is more interesting to call special attention to a the grudge and skill matchups, so they have their own headings.

What do all the challenge select opponent options mean?

When creating a challenge, the creator can specify that it be shown to any skill level competitor, only competitors within .125 of his average, or a specific competitor challenged by name for a grudge match. Once someone creates a challenge that you qualify for, it appears in Your House as an open challenge. If you create a challenge, it will appear in the Your House section for each competitor who you specify (all competitors, only those within .125 of your average, or one you have challenged to grudge match). Once you have created a challenge, someone may accept your challenge and you will have a war. Or, 30 days will go by and your challenge will expire. Maybe no one wants to play in your zydeco war with the authentic Cyoobian backing track you have supplied. If so, you are free to place this entry in another war.

When I make a challenge, will my challenge be anonymous?

If you select "any opponent" or "same skill level" your challenge will be anonymous. If you challenge an opponent by name (grudge match), your challenge will not be anonymous.

How do I set up a same backing track challenge?

First, upload the backing track to files section of Your House. Then, when you are creating your challenge, just select that backing tracking Mp3 from the drop down list and click the Same Backing Track radio button. When your opponent sees the challenge, he will be able to download the mp3 of your backing track to create an entry.Your opponent won't be able to see your filename, or your folder, so your anonymity will be preserved. However, if you put your name in the mp3's internal info, they will see it, so check that.

What do the different judging rules mean?

  • Standard Rules (focus on the technical and melodic merits of the lead instrument in the entry)
  • Accuracy (who is sloppier?)
  • Complexity Focus (which one is harder to play?)
  • Composition Focus (which one has more melodic/chordal development?)
  • Hit Potential (which one more likely to be a hit song?)
  • Melody Focus (which one has a more catchy or interesting lead?)
  • Production Focus (who made the better backing and overall sound?)
  • Speed Focus (who is faster?)

What is a challenge war?

A challenge war is a customized competition created by one member to challenge others. A challenge war can have specifications about the instrument used, the style of music played, the backing track and the judging criteria for the customized contest.

[ Top ]

What is a grudge match war?

A grudge match is a personal challenge from one member to another. The member on the left side posted an entry with custom challenge rules and personally challenged the player on the right side to a competition based on those rules.

[ Top ]

What is a skill matched war?

A skill matched war is an open challenge from one member to any other member with a similar win/loss average. The challenger is matched up with any player whose average is +/-.125 of the challenger's average. For example, if player A has an average of .333, he will be matched up with any player whose average is between .208 and .458.
